KLM celebrates start of the Netherlands’ first SAF plant with SkyNRG

Big sustainability milestone: KLM and SkyNRG have officially begun construction of the Netherlands’ first dedicated SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) plant in Delfzijl.

Timeline:
Plant expected to start producing SAF in 2028.

Scale:
Annual output ~100,000 tons, with KLM committing to purchase 75,000 tons (75% of total).

Investment:
Nearly €3 billion long-term offtake agreement, directly enabling the project’s financing.

Impact:
SAF reduces lifecycle CO₂ emissions by 65–90% compared to fossil kerosene.

Leadership:
KLM co-founded SkyNRG in 2009 and has been a pioneer in SAF development.

Policy Context:
SAF is still 3–4x more expensive than fossil kerosene. KLM is urging government support (e.g., a national SAF fund) to accelerate scaling and affordability.

National Target:
The Netherlands aims for 14% SAF blending by 2030.

This project, called DSL-01, is a tangible step toward large-scale SAF production in Europe and positions KLM as a global leader in aviation sustainability.
