Shangri-La has unveiled a major new project in Japan: Songtei Kyoto, Shangri-La Signatures, set to open late 2026 opposite Nijō Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
About Songtei Kyoto
- Part of the Shangri-La Signatures ultra-luxury collection (second property after The Silk Lakehouse, Hangzhou).
- Built on the historic site of the Kyoto Shoshidai residence, reimagining Edo-period grandeur through contemporary design.
- Features 77 rooms and suites, each framing curated views of Nijō Castle’s Kita Ote-mon Gate and gardens.
- Name meaning: “Song” (pine, longevity & fortune) + “Tei” (home) — symbolizing refined hospitality rooted in Kyoto’s spirit.
Experiences & Facilities
- Immersive programming across art, wellness, gastronomy, and storytelling.
- Holistic wellness sanctuary: private spa, indoor/outdoor hot baths, pool, and gym.
- Facilities will open progressively, with a full unveiling in early 2027.
Culinary offerings:
- All-day dining lounge
- Chinese fine dining restaurant
- Kappo-sushi counter
- Intimate evening bar
Context & Prestige
- Follows the success of The Silk Lakehouse, Shangri-La Hangzhou, which earned global acclaim including TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026 and Prix Versailles’ World’s Most Beautiful Hotels 2026.
- Reinforces Shangri-La’s vision of rare sanctuaries defined by location, heritage, and personalized hosting.
This project positions Kyoto as a new focal point for ultra-luxury experiential travel, blending cultural depth with Shangri-La’s signature hospitality.
