Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has confirmed that Runway 11R/29L — the third runway at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) — will be back in operation from September 20, 2026 after a major rehabilitation program.
Key Upgrades
- Runway resurfacing and pavement strengthening
- Permanent threshold displacement of runway 29L
- Construction of a new Rapid Exit Taxiway (RET Z1)
- Upgraded airfield ground lighting systems
- Civil and electrical infrastructure improvements
Benefits
- Improved runway efficiency and reduced aircraft occupancy time
- Optimized aircraft movement and faster turnaround
- Enhanced reliability in varying weather conditions
- Increased long-term capacity for one of India’s busiest airports
Context
- Commissioned in 2008, the runway has been in service for 17 years.
- Minor rehabilitation was done in 2017, but this 2026 overhaul is far more comprehensive.
- The project involved close coordination with DGCA, AAI, ATC, and airlines to meet all safety and regulatory standards.
CEO Pradeep Panicker emphasized that this milestone strengthens Delhi Airport’s resilience and future readiness, aligning with India’s growing aviation demand.
This recommissioning is especially significant because Delhi Airport already handles over 70 million passengers annually, and with India’s aviation sector expanding rapidly, every bit of added efficiency matters.
