IHG’s latest move in Malaysia is quite significant — it’s not just about adding hotels, but about reshaping their business model and brand presence in the region.
Franchise model debut:
This is IHG’s first time introducing franchising in Malaysia, opening up more opportunities for conversions and repositioning of existing hotels.
Garner brand launch:
The Garner Hotel Kota Kinabalu (202 rooms, phased opening in 2027 and 2029) will be the first Garner in Malaysia. Garner is IHG’s fast-growing midscale conversion brand, designed for dependable quality at affordable prices.
Holiday Inn Express Tawau:
Scheduled for 2028 after refurbishment, it will be IHG’s first hotel in Tawau, strengthening their footprint in Sabah’s tourism corridor.
Strategic Impact
- Expansion footprint: With these signings, IHG’s Malaysia portfolio grows to 20+ open and pipeline hotels across key destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Melaka, and Penang.
- Sabah focus: Kota Kinabalu’s leisure appeal (Mount Kinabalu, Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park) and Tawau’s diving/nature attractions make them strong growth markets.
- Owner partnership: King Park Hotel Sdn. Bhd brings local expertise, aligning with IHG’s global distribution and brand strength.
Guest Experience
- Garner Hotels: Comfortable rooms, quality breakfast, and local touches — a flexible model appealing to both owners and travellers.
- Holiday Inn Express: Built around “simple, smart travel” with complimentary Express Start™ breakfast, appealing to both business and leisure guests.
This move signals IHG’s intent to deepen its midscale presence in Malaysia while diversifying beyond traditional metro markets. It’s also a clever way to leverage conversions — turning existing hotels into globally branded properties with stronger market positioning.
